A crown encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. It protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Common conditions resolved by a dental crown:
• protect or restore a weak or cracked tooth
• cover a filling when decay has effected a large area of the tooth
• cover a dental implant or hold a dental bridge in place
• cosmetic modifications
• To protect a tooth after root canal therapy
Our porcelain crowns do not contain any metal which can discolor the crown with age. They are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced.
What typically does getting a crown involve?
A crown is usually completed in two appointments. Your first appointment will be spent preparing the tooth for the crown. This typically means getting out any cavities present and cleaning the area as well as getting a mold of the tooth so that a lab can make a custom crown for that fits just right. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory. Your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.
About two weeks later, you will come in for your second appointment. At this time, your temporary crown will be gently removed, the tooth will be cleaned again, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite feels normal and accurate.
How about a single visit crown?
Technology available in the offices of some cosmetic dentists enables them to provide “Computer-assisted design-Computer-assisted manufacture” crowns, or “CAD-CAM.” The company that is foremost in this technology is CEREC. This crown is milled by a computer to fit your tooth precisely, thus eliminating the laboratory step in manufacturing the crown.
With CEREC’s CAD-CAM technology, the crown is made by a computer while you wait, thus eliminating the second appointment and the temporary crown. These CEREC crowns are milled out of highest quality pure ceramic.
